education
I identify most as a lifelong learner and educator. I've had the opportunity to work on programs and teach in a variety of settings for numerous organizations. Here's a few of the highlights and some fun stuff sprinkled in.

Theorists of Student Development Bookmarks

Maybe you need study aids for an upcoming student development exam. Maybe you need something cooler to mark your book pages than white index cards or grocery store receipts. Maybe you think Arthur Chickering looks too good not to have a printed picture of him somewhere in your posession. Whatever your reason, here's a set of nine Theorists of Student Development bookmarks to keep you warm at night:

Using Reflection and Solo to Promote Student Leadership

While an instructor at North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS), I became very interested in how to best facilitate the reflection of students on multi-week backpacking courses. At NCOBS, we used solo periods of reflection, journaling, group debriefing, and artistic creation to help students make meaning of their experiences with authentic leadership and the diversity of their crew.

At the University of Georgia - Georgia Outdoor Recreation Program, I've integrated some of these activities, and some from other sources, into trip leader training. View these reflection activities and resources from a recent presentation

Wisconsin Basecamp

I started Wisconsin Basecamp with my friend Finn Ryan at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. After extensive project planning, we piloted two 5-day canoe camping trips during the summer of 2007 that were offered to university freshmen as an outdoor orientation experience prior to starting their fall semester. The first year we had 18 participants. We expanded to 55 participants on 6 different trips (including adding backpacking trips to the mix) before we gave the program to the Wisconsin Union, where it is still running today - http://www.union.wisc.edu/wisconsinbasecamp/.

Throughout founding the program, I initiated collaborations across campus; prepared numerous program planning documents and the program website; planned logistics for the trips; oversaw risk management; marketed the trips to incoming students and their parents; and recruited, trained, and supervised student trip leaders.

The program was featured in the UW-Madison Viewbook, which is distributed to all incoming freshmen students.

There was an article on the program featured in the Isthmus, a popular weekly newspaper in Madison.
